What is Feldenkrais?
Feldenkrais consists of work on learning and awareness of movements and body patterns and how that study and application can be translated into life.
Through learning our preferences in posture and movement, we are supported by the practitioner and are able to explore alternative ways to move more effortlessly. There is a gradual shifting and improvement without the forceful change on the structure and pattern within a system.
In Awareness Through Movement, the class is guided through a series of non-habitual movements and each becomes aware of the space between movements and how we use ourselves. A lighter and more effortless possibility is explored and thus takes its place in our range of actions.
ATM classes facilitate greater self-awareness through movements that are fun, graceful and possible for anyone.
Feldenkrais ATM classes are done with students lying on mats and a
teacher guiding the movements. Unlike a class where the student copies
the teacher or another student, the ATM class is meant for the
individual to find his own range of comfort while following the verbal
description of each movement. No criticism or individual correction is
ever used. Rather, a nurturing atmosphere is created through language,
acceptance of individual range of possibility and encouragement of self
This work is done fully clothed and is a gentle practice of moving within one's comfort zone with attention. When the mind wanders and movement becomes mechanical, we pause to refocus and continue with attention to that which we are learning.
